COURSE OVERVIEW
The AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting is an Ofqual-regulated Level 3 qualification designed to develop advanced practical accounting skills for employment or progression to Level 4.
This diploma covers four core units—Financial Accounting: Preparing Financial Statements, Management Accounting Techniques, Tax Processes for Businesses, and Business Awareness—providing strong skills in advanced bookkeeping, cost accounting, and producing financial reports.
On completion, students can progress to the AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting and apply for AAT Bookkeeping Membership (AATQB).

You must have a sound knowledge of bookkeeping principles to undertake the AAT Level 3 programme. Achievement of a merit at AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping or a L2 Accountancy qualification is essential. Students must also hold a GCSE grade 4 in English or maths or equivalent qualification.
On successful completion of this course, you can progress to the AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting The skills and knowledge you will gain throughout this qualification will qualify you for roles including Finance Officer, Assistant Accountant and Bookkeeper. You will also be eligible for AAT Bookkeeper (AATQB) status, giving you the option to work as a freelance bookkeeper.
The AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting is assessed entirely through four computer-based exams, one for each mandatory unit. These assessments test the practical application of accounting knowledge in real-world scenarios.
You will complete one exam per unit:
- Financial Accounting: Preparing Financial Statements
- Management Accounting Techniques
- Tax Processes for Businesses
- Business Awareness
- Exams are computer-based assessments (CBAs).
- They include a mix of task-based questions, calculations, scenario-based problems, and written elements.
Your final grade is based on your combined performance across all four assessments, with each unit contributing a set percentage toward the overall grade.
Advanced Learner Loans Learners who are aged 19 and over and studying Level 3 – 6 Further Education and training programmes. Advanced Learner Loans will give learners in further education access to financial support for tuition costs, similar to that which is available in Higher Education. This means rather than an individual having to pay for their course upfront they have the option of accessing a loan, from the Student Loans Company, that they will only start to repay once they have left the course and are earning over £25,000. Learners aged 19 and over will therefore have the option to either:
- Pay the course fees themselves
- Have an employer/sponsor pay the course fees for them
- Apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to help pay for the course fees
The Advanced Learner Loans are for anyone who is:
- Aged 19 and above at the start of their course
- Studying at Level 3 – 6 in Further Education and training
- Resident in the UK
- Has not previously had a loan to do the same type and level of qualification.
The loan is available irrespective of the learner’s current employment status and the loan will not be means tested or subject to any credit checks. Note: To study and sit exams, you must register as an AAT Student Member. These fees are not included in the course fees charged by the college. The cost of the course includes tuition and first exam sitting for each module, but does not include text books or membership fees.
This Level 3 course is part of the National Skills Fund initiative and is fully funded for eligible learners. Alternatively, you can apply for an advanced learner loan to cover the cost of studying this course. Please ask a member of college staff for more information.
