Hands-On Heritage: Crawley College Students Learn Traditional Skills
Crawley College construction students recently got hands-on with a series of engaging heritage courses, delivered by the Sussex Heritage Trust.
The sessions, held at Bader College at Herstmonceux Castle, included a one-day ornamental plastering course and were followed by a sash window repair session.
There was representation from across the Chichester College Group, as students were joined by peers from Brighton MET College and Chichester College, with the day allowing all students to work directly with industry experts and master craftspeople.
Each student was also able to gain real hands-on experience in traditional techniques and learn more about specialist heritage conservation skills and career pathways within the sector.
This follows on from a two-day session held covering traditional carpentry & joinery techniques, led by Sussex Heritage Trust, and held at the same site as the hit BBC TV show The Repair Shop.
A spokesperson for the Sussex Heritage Trust said:
“It is fantastic to be able to offer Chichester College Group students the opportunity to learn heritage skills directly from industry experts and master craftspeople through our Taster Day Programme.
“These experiences not only inspire the next generation of heritage craftspeople but also showcase valuable career pathways within a sector currently facing a shortage of skilled professionals.
“By encouraging students to develop traditional conservation skills, we can help ensure Sussex’s heritage continues to be protected for years to come.”
