Candidates will ideally have English language and Maths GCSE grade C/4 or above (if not they will work towards Functional Skills equivalents) Apprentices must be in paid employment in the relevant industry to cover the requirements of the standard and will ideally work at least 30 hours per week. Assessments need to be taken to determine suitability for the Apprenticeship and to look at additional support if required. The Apprentice must have a contract of employment and be covered under their employer’s relevant insurance.

- Carry out vehicle servicing and routine maintenance, using manufacturer specifications and service schedules
- Perform vehicle inspections and safety checks, identifying faults and assessing wear and damage.
- Remove and replace key components such as tyres, brakes, suspension, and batteries.
- Understand and work on core vehicle systems including steering, braking, electrical, and exhaust systems.
- Use tools, measuring equipment, and diagnostic systems to support fault finding and repairs.
- Apply health & safety practices, including PPE, COSHH, and safe working procedures
- Gain awareness of hybrid and electric vehicle systems and safe working around high-voltage components.
- Develop customer service skills, including advising customers and recommending repairs
- Learn basic business operations, including stock control, parts handling, and workshop efficiency.
- Build workplace skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, time management, and communication.
After completing the Autocare Technician Level 2 Apprenticeship, students have clear progression routes into further training and employment. They can move on to a Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician apprenticeship, developing advanced diagnostic and repair skills and working towards becoming a fully qualified technician. Learners may also progress onto specialist courses, such as electric and hybrid vehicle qualifications, to meet growing industry demand. In terms of employment, many apprentices secure full-time roles as autocare technicians.
