COURSE OVERVIEW
This new IMI Level 2 Technical Occupational Entry Qualification in Automotive Care will equip you with the essential knowledge, practical skills, and professional behaviours needed to service, diagnose, and repair vehicles within the automotive industry.
Designed to be hands-on, engaging, and motivating, this qualification will support your pathway into employment in automotive maintenance and repair. It covers a broad range of vehicle systems, including fuel, air, and exhaust systems, engine operations, transmission and driveline components, as well as emerging technologies such as hydrogen fuel systems and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
Every learner at Crawley College who is under 19 will undertake a personal Study Programme designed to develop them academically, practically and personally. Study Programmes contain 3 essential elements:
- Subject Course – Vocational or chosen Academic subject, usually studied for 12 – 16 hours a week.
- English and Maths – Every learner will work towards GCSE grade 4 in English and Maths or Functional Skills. Learners who have already achieved a Grade 4 or C will extend their English and Maths through in-class activities.
- PDP – Our own brand of pastoral support and development.
You will have specific time in your timetable for each of the three elements above and you will be expected to attend all elements throughout the year. Study programmes are designed to help you meet your maximum potential and progress to the next level of study or into work.
FURTHER INFORMATION
Every applicant will be assessed on an individual basis that will look at areas such as experience, prior training, academic level and interest in working in the retail automotive industry.
You will need to have either:
- GCSE grade 4 or higher in both English and Maths for direct entry ( no prior motor vehicle qualifications)
or
- Level 1 IMI Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance (or equivalent) and a minimum of GCSE grade 3 or higher in either English or Maths
Successful candidates will receive the IMIAL Level 2 Technical Occupational Entry in Automotive Care qualification.
Candidates who achieve this award could progress to the full time Level 3 Diploma, or into an Apprenticeship (dependent upon full time employment within the light vehicle service and repair industry).
Assessment of practical ability is carried out in the college workshops and is assessed in the last term by an end point practical session that covers arrange of tasks learnt throughout the course. Assessment of technical knowledge is carried out via on-line examination. You will also need to pass two on-line multiple-choice exams to achieve this award.
There is a compulsory fee for the course of £40.This covers the cost of materials and consumables required for the course and a personalised polo shirt as part of the uniform.

You are required to provide your own safety footwear and overalls/work trousers; these are mandatory for use in the workshops and are not part of the course cost.
Students 16-18 year olds will not have to pay tuition fees, awarding body registration or exam fees. Please note: You may be entitled to a Bursary payment to help with costs such as travel to College, trips and equipment, a food allowance and childcare. To qualify you must be resident in the UK and meet the eligibility criteria which will include evidence of your financial circumstances.
