From Textbooks to Turbines: Crawley College Students Step Into the World of Aviation Engineering
Crawley College T Level students soared into the world of aviation engineering as they embarked on an industry placement with Air Atlanta Aviaservices.
The placement, one of the college’s largest with a single employer, gave 24 T Level Maintenance, Installation and Repair students the chance to put classroom learning into practice in a live engineering environment, working alongside experienced aviation professionals.
Delivered through the Sussex & Surrey Institute of Technology, students were split into two groups and spent several weeks within the business, gaining experience in real aircraft maintenance operations.
These included hands-on experience with aircraft wheel and brake systems, non-destructive testing, oxygen systems, component inspection and aircraft interiors.
Working in this live aviation environment allowed students to experience firsthand the precision, responsibility, and technical expertise required in the sector.
Throughout the programme, students were mentored and supported by Air Atlanta Aviaservices employees, who took time to explain processes, answer questions and share their own industry experience.
Air Atlanta Aviaservices provides specialist maintenance, repair and overhaul services for aircraft components used within the aviation industry.
Christine Bianchin, Principal of Crawley College, said:
“We are incredibly proud of our students for embracing this unique opportunity with Air Atlanta Aviaservices.
“Industry placements are at the heart of T Levels, giving students the chance to apply their learning in a real-world setting and develop the technical and professional skills employers are looking for.
“This partnership has provided invaluable insight into the aviation sector and demonstrates the exceptional opportunities available to our students through the Sussex & Surrey Institute of Technology.”
