Starting and running a small business requires a wide range of skills, key amongst these is financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting. 11% of owner-managers do not have any educational qualifications, whilst the number with low levels of qualifications is much higher.
With 20% of start-ups failing in the first year of operation and more than 50% within 5 years (ONS), helping entrepreneurs to develop sound business skills is one way to support businesses to thrive and grow.

- Entering information into a spreadsheet
- Navigating the spreadsheet
- The formula bar
- Adding and Subtracting
- Performing a calculation
- Multiplying and Dividing
- Formatting cells
- Changing the font and font size
- Changing the horizontal alignment of the cells
- Wrapping text
- Orientation of text
- Totalling columns and rows
- The Autosum button
- Functions
- Copying formula
- Absolute cell references
- Sorting information
This in turn will help:
- business planning and costing
- cash flow and debt
- financial forecasting
- budgeting
- profit and loss.
This will be undertaken via a work-related mini business planning project, the use of Excel and will provide learners with financial literacy training which will support start-up, micro and small businesses.
