BTEC Level 3 in Engineering (Aeronautical, Electrical Electronic, and Mechanical)
COURSE OVERVIEW
The National Foundation Diploma is the first year of a two year BTEC course in Engineering. This course provides a strong foundation in engineering across multiple disciplines and allows learners to explore aeronautical, electrical electronic and manufacturing knowledge skills and practices. The course is for students who wish to progress into skilled Engineering employment or higher-level technical training or study. The main area of study covers both theoretical and practical learning with a focus on project-based learning. In year one you will study Engineering Principles, Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team, Engineering Product Design and Manufacture, Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering, Work Experience in the Engineering Sector, Electrical Machines and Manufacturing Secondary Machining Processes. These units will give you a foundation to continue onto an aeronautical, electrical or manufacturing engineering extended diploma.
STEM building
The college has built a multi-million pound facility at Crawley College that puts the college at the cutting edge of training delivery in computing. The new building is home to a suite of modern teaching and interactive spaces, which integrate the use of technology and STEM (science, technology, engineering & maths) into its curriculum. One of the benefits of joining a large college group such as the Chichester College Group is that the Aeronautical provision has been working with colleagues at our Shoreham campus to provide wider resources for students to work on aircrafts within their hanger.
FURTHER INFORMATION
This course is suitable for candidates who have achieved their L2 in Engineering already, or who have significant knowledge and experience in the industry.
We would recommend apprentices have achieved a grade 4 or above in both English and Maths to study this qualification.
Progression to aeronautical, electrical or manufacturing engineering extended diploma or employment in the engineering sector. Progression to apprenticeships is also supported from this programme.
The units are assessed in a variety of ways including coursework
using assignment briefs that contain practical activities and simulations while
other modules will be assessed using externally marked exams.
Students are advised to purchase their own Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) such as overalls and boots in the first weeks of the course. The likely cost of this is approximately £45. The PPE allows you to fully participate in the practical components of the course, in accordance with the relevant Health and Safety regulations. PPE is used throughout the student’;s time on the Engineering programme.
An important part of all vocational courses at
Chichester College is work experience.
You are expected to complete work experience over
the period of the course and this is why the course has Unit 9 embedded to support this aim.
This gives you invaluable experience of working
life, and can lead to increased employment opportunities.
If you are under 19, and not in possession of
Grade 4 GCSE’;s in Maths and English, you will continue to work towards them
whilst at the college.

Offers will be sent to you via the email address you have provided. The offer will be conditional, based on predicted GCSE grades. You’ll need to accept your offer within 14 days to secure your place.
