Bench Joinery Diploma – Level 3 – RCON079F1A Full time & RCON079D1A Part time
COURSE OVERVIEW
You’ll learn the advanced practical skills and theoretical knowledge to carry out complex operations in the workplace. As a joiner, you’ll be trained to use a variety of machines to make curved frames and staircases, boxed framed windows and spandrel panelling.
This course is ideal for young people who are not employed in the trade, as it will provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills to enable to gain employment in the industry or a NVQ.
This course focuses on practical activity but includes some written theory and portfolio building, consists of the following units:
- CSA-L1Core01 Health, safety and welfare in the construction and associated industries
- CSA-L3Core07 Analysing technical information, quantities and communication with others
- CSA-L3Core08 Analysing the construction industry and the built environment
- CSA-L3Occ135 Set up and operate woodworking machinery to create curved work
- CSA-L3Occ136 Manufacture shaped joinery products
- CSA-L3Occ137 Set and mark out for shaped joinery products
At this advanced level, working in our simulated workshop environment, you will learn a wide variety of practical skills (and theoretical knowledge) which will enable you to carry out complex operations in a Joinery workshop and prepare you for entry to Workshop Management. Areas to cover include curved work including frames and staircases, boxed frame windows, spandrel panelling and units and fitments. You will be trained to use a wide variety of machines to produce the various pieces of work. There will be a number of theory assessments with a final practical assignment to complete the qualification.
Every learner at Crawley College who is under 19 will undertake a personal Study Programme designed to develop them academically, practically and personally. Study Programmes contain 3 essential elements:
- Subject Course – Vocational or chosen Academic subject, usually studied for 12 – 16 hours a week.
- English and Maths – Every learner ideally will have GCSE grade 4 in English and Maths
You will have specific time in your timetable for each of the three elements above and you will be expected to attend all elements throughout the year. Study programmes are designed to help you meet your maximum potential and progress to the next level of study of into work
L3 Bench Joinery Full-Time & Part-Time
The course builds on L2 Bench Joinery learning how to use woodworking machinery to create curved carpentry and Joinery products such as arched windows, arched doors & turned stairs. Along with knowledge of the construction industry including health & safety.
Assessment is ongoing through the year with 5 theory units requiring the passing of online exams and the completion of a practical synoptic task.
Progression routes include Construction and Built Environment Higher National Certificate HNC L4.
Equipment required includes: A textbook, notebook, tape measure, corded headphones for theory lessons, 2H pencils, a maths set of drawing equipment and PPE equipment including safety boots, dust masks, eye protection and suitable gloves.
Attendance is 3 days a week for full time students. For part time students attendance is either 2 nights a week for 3 hours each night or 6 hours a week attending during the day, infilling with full time students.
Course length is 35 weeks
FURTHER INFORMATION
You will have completed the Level 2 programme in Bench Joinery.
Upon completion of this course you will be able to progress onto a Site Management course on a full-time or part-time basis. Once in employment the knowledge and skills gained from the Level 3 Diploma will produce a solid foundation to study a Level 2 or 3 NVQ.
The course consists of 60% practical and 40% theory based activities you will produce a portfolio of your assignments.
Students 16-18 year olds will not have to pay tuition fees, awarding body registration or exam fees. Please note: You may be entitled to a Bursary payment to help with costs such as travel to College, trips and equipment, a food allowance and childcare. To qualify you must be resident in the UK and meet the eligibility criteria which will include evidence of your financial circumstances.

Level 3 Entitlement: students aged 19-23 years old who are studying for their first qualification at Level 3 will be fully-funded, which means your tuition fees, awarding body registration or exam fees will be covered.
Advanced Learner Loans
Learners who are aged 19 and over and studying Level 3 – 6 Further Education and training programmes.
Advanced Learner Loans will give learners in further education access to financial support for tuition costs, similar to that which is available in Higher Education. This means rather than an individual having to pay for their course upfront they have the option of accessing a loan, from the Student Loans Company, that they will only start to repay once they have left the course and are earning over £25,000.
Learners aged 19 and over will therefore have the option to either:
- Pay the course fees themselves
- Have an employer/sponsor pay the course fees for them
- Apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to help pay for the course fees
The Advanced Learner Loans are for anyone who is:
- Aged 19 and above at the start of their course
- Studying at Level 3 – 6 in Further Education and training
- Resident in the UK
- Has not previously had a loan to do the same type and level of qualification.
The loan is available irrespective of the learner’s current employment status and the loan will not be means tested or subject to any credit checks.
