About the course

The AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting is an ideal starting point for anyone wishing to pursue a career in accountancy or finance.

The qualification covers a range of foundation accounting and finance skills in five mandatory units.

  • Bookkeeping Transactions
  • Bookkeeping Controls
  • Elements of Costing
  • Work Effectively in Finance
  • Using Accounting Software

Students completing this qualification will develop accountancy skills in double-entry bookkeeping which give an understanding of purchases, sales and general ledgers as well as basic costing. In addition, students will learn to use Sage accounting software.

This course develops the professional skills and behaviours needed to contribute effectively in the workplace.

Working in accountancy requires good communication skills, IT skills and an understanding of the business environment, all of which are covered by this qualification.

WHO CAN JOIN?

This course is suitable for those aged over 19 on the start date of their studies.

Applicants should be educated to at least GCSE level with 5 passes at grade A-C/4-9, or level 2 in Basic Skills.

Applicants maybe required to take Entrance Test which is to include Literacy and Numeracy if the above GCSE results are not in place.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED

Students must successfully complete four unit assessments and one synoptic assessment to achieve this qualification.

All assessments in this qualification are:

  • Set and marked by AAT
  • Computer based
  • Three are marked by the computer
  • One is marked partly by computer and partly human marked.
  • One is wholly human marked

To achieve the qualification a student must pass all the mandatory assessments and the synoptic assessment.

The synoptic assessment tests four of the mandatory units – Bookkeeping Transactions, Bookkeeping Controls, Elements of Costing and Work Effectively in Finance.  Work Effectively in Finance is only tested in the Synoptic Assessment.  It is not tested separately.

Unit and synoptic assessments are not awarded grades individually, but the marks achieved in all assessments contribute to the student’s overall grade for the qualification.

Grades awarded are:

Distinction – 90% - 100%

Merit – 80% - 89%

Pass – 70% - 79%

Unclassified – 0% - 69%

Costs/EQUIPMENT

Students aged 19 and over will have to pay tuition fees, awarding body registration or exam fees. Please note: You may be entitled to a Bursary payment to help with costs such as travel to College, trips and equipment and childcare. To qualify you must be resident in the UK and meet the eligibility criteria which will include evidence of your financial circumstances.

Note: All AAT students have to personally register as student members of the AAT. For all Levels and all ages the cost on initial registration is £131. they are also expected to purchase the books that are required for the course which totals £120.00.

Attendance requirements

Day Courses

September - Wednesday from 09:45 – 14:00 for 36 weeks.

January - Tuesday - 09:45 - 14:00 for 36 weeks

Evening Course - September - Tuesday 18:00 – 21:00 for 30 weeks from September – May.

Additionally twice a week Tuesday and Thursday 18:00-21:00 from May – June.

In addition to attendance at the College you will be expected to undertake self-study at home for approximately 2 hours a week

 

AFTER COMPLETING THE COURSE

On successful completion of this course you may progress to the AAT Foundation Diploma or obtain employment as an accounts assistant.
