About the course

In this course you will learn how to produce oil paintings with confidence and creative expression. I will lead you through the process of oil painting stage by stage, from colour mixing to working with tone a and how to approach painting from direct observation and from secondary sources.

 

The course covers: different oil painting techniques, from sgrafitto to impasto; how to sketch in oils; building up layers; use of palette knives; applying gazes; blending colour and how to use form and tone to paint light and shadow. You will develop your personal style and learn how to create striking compositions.

 

We will look at key painting examples by both historical and contemporary artists working in oils by famous artists.

 

This course is a great introduction if you’re a beginner, but can help you practise and develop new skills if you already have some experience in oils.

Please note this is due up front and in full before enrolment and we do not offer funding support for short courses.

You will be provided with the materials you need as part of the course fee, but may also need to purchase additional supplies of your own depending on what you produce.

Attendance requirements

Tuesday 6pm-8:30pm 

AFTER COMPLETING THE COURSE

You can take up painting in oils in the WInter and Spring terms next year if you wish to develop your skills further

Also you should have expected to:

•           Be able to produce oil studies and paintings using their own creative style

•           Have an understanding of the use of different techniques in oil painting

•           Become confident in colour mixing, use of tone, and composition.

  • Students who need to use cars to travel to Crawley campus should be aware that there is very limited parking available. If you drive to the College you will get a parking permit with your booking confirmation. As well as displaying your car park permit, you will be charged 50p per day to park. There is also a bus stop and train station located very close to the college.
  • Students who attend courses at the Crawley campus have to obtain a student identity card, please report to the Reception indicated on your booking confirmation and they will be able to advise you on this matter.
