About the course

In this course you will learn how to produce oil paintings with confidence and creative expression. I will lead you through the process of oil painting stage by stage, from colour mixing to working with tone a and how to approach painting from direct observation and from secondary sources.

The course covers: different oil painting techniques, from sgrafitto to impasto; how to sketch in oils; building up layers; use of palette knives; applying gazes; blending colour and how to use form and tone to paint light and shadow. You will develop your personal style and learn how to create striking compositions.

We will look at key painting examples by both historical and contemporary artists working in oils by famous artists.

This course is a great introduction if you’re a beginner, but can help you practise and develop new skills if you already have some experience in oils.
