About the course

This is an employment related degree combining theory and practice.  Teaching and learning will consist of lectures,  work based learning, workshops, seminars, discussion groups, action planning, self assessment  and  independent study.  Assessment is based on a number of different formats including portfolio, case study, coursework presentations and written essays.

You will be studying 6 modules at level 4 and 6 modules at level 5 which include:

  • Child Development
  • Working with Babies
  • Developing Academic Skills
  • Learning through Play
  • Reflective Practice in Early Years Settings
  • Research Methods
  • International Perspectives of Childhood
  • Safeguarding Children
  • Inspiring Curriclums
  • Health & Wellbeing of Yung Children
  • Understanding Childrens Behaviours
  • Working in Partnership with the Childs Family


This course is designed for Early Years Professionals who are currently paid or volunteering for a minimum of 12 hours per week with young children in an early years setting, in a range of roles in either the maintained or non-maintained sector.  This course is designed for practitioners who may wish to progress onto the BA Hons in Early Years and who may want to gain promotion or change their role entirely.

Have you completed your Level 3 qualification in Early Years Education and wish to to progress further? You need to have a Level 3 qualification (eg. DCE, NNEB or NVQ Level 3 in Early Years Care and Education or Care, Learning and Development).  Achieved Maths and English GCSE at grade C/4 or above is required for progression to EYTS and to a full degree.  You will also need to have 2 years experience working within the Early Years Sector.


The course is delivered and assessed as follows.

Teaching and Learning proportions:

Face to face = 22%

Independent study = 50%

Placement = 28%

Assessment proportions:

Coursework = 75%

Practical assessment = 25%

Students will achieve a qualification as a Lead Professional in Early Years

The Foundation Degree provides a basis for progression through a top up route to :

BA Degree in Early Childhood and Early Years Teacher Status or BA (Hons) and PGCE qualification (subject to entry conditions of receiving institution)
