About the course

You will expand your skills, becoming a bricklayer at an advanced level and developing a comprehensive knowledge of the construction industry. You will learn to construct fireplaces, arches and chimneys alongside intricate decorative features and complex maintenance work.

This course is made up of 6 units that cover both trade specific skills as well as the more generic skills covering subjects such as health and safety and communications.

The units you will be studying are:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
  • Analysing technical information, quantities and communication with others
  • Analysing the construction industry and built environment
  • Repair and maintain masonry structures
  • Construct chimneys and fireplace structures
  • Construct decorative features

Every learner at Crawley College who is under 19 will undertake a personal Study Programme designed to develop them academically, practically and personally. Study Programmes contain 3 essential elements:

  • Subject Course – Vocational or chosen Academic subject, usually studied for 12 – 16 hours a week.
  • English and Maths – Every learner will work towards GCSE grade 4 in English and Maths or Functional Skills. Learners who have already achieved a Grade 4 or C will extend their English and Maths through in-class activities.
  • 3E – Our own brand of specific entrepreneurship, enterprise and employability training.

You will have specific time in your timetable for each of the three elements above and you will be expected to attend all elements throughout the year.  Study programmes are designed to help you meet your maximum potential and progress to the next level of study or into work.

WHO CAN JOIN?

You will have completed the Level 2 programme in Bricklaying.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED

Advanced Learner Loans

Learners who are aged 19 and over and studying Level 3 - 6 Further Education and training programmes.

Advanced Learner Loans will give learners in further education access to financial support for tuition costs, similar to that which is available in Higher Education. This means rather than an individual having to pay for their course upfront they have the option of accessing a loan, from the Student Loans Company, that they will only start to repay once they have left the course and are earning over £25,000.

Learners aged 19 and over will therefore have the option to either:

  • Pay the course fees themselves
  • Have an employer/sponsor pay the course fees for them
  • Apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to help pay for the course fees

The Advanced Learner Loans are for anyone who is:

  • Aged 19 and above at the start of their course
  • Studying at Level 3 - 6 in Further Education and training
  • Resident in the UK
  • Has not previously had a loan to do the same type and level of qualification.

The loan is available irrespective of the learner’s current employment status and the loan will not be means tested or subject to any credit checks.

Attendance requirements

15 hours over 2 and half days per week.
