Tutors and librarians host English extravaganza at Crawley College
Earlier this term, GCSE English tutors and librarians from Crawley College ran an inspiring set of workshops over the space of a week for GCSE students.
The sessions took place within their scheduled two-hour English session and saw multiple classes coming over to the second floor of the library at a time to take part in the activity.
In total approximately 380 students attended more than 10 sessions, in which students chose two books; one fiction linked to a TV show or film and a biography from a selection created by the college librarians.
There was a wide range of books available to students, including children’s and adult fiction, with some classics such as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings to newer adaptations of Bridgerton, Heartstopper and Dune.
Harry Potter, Heartstopper and Roald Dahl books proved to be the most popular with students, as most of them had either watched them recently via streaming or recognised the film from childhood.
Sports and music biographies were also on display, with biographies of footballers proving popular. Reality star biographies were also well used, with some students choosing Bear Grylls and Greta Thunberg.
Students then had to fill in an activity for each book and write out the first line of the book for a display, with the finished display will be transferred to the English team for display in the College
Some of the students completed a feedback form after their visit, with comments including:
“I am struggling in my GCSE…I am going to come back and search again, Thanks Crawley Library!”
“Made me want to pick up another book and read. Would be good if events like this be held more often in future.”
“The little sheets provided (were useful) and the books were varied so not everyone did the same book. It was brilliant.”
