COURSE OVERVIEW
Successful Welders and Fabricators can change slabs of metal, piping, plastic, ceramic, composite materials and into functional useful items that can be used to aid, process and support man in a variety of different roles. An engineer will have experience and knowledge of using various processes to achieve the end result whether it is Welding, Brazing, Soldering, Bonding or Surfacing to get to the heart of the problem and recommend solutions. This programme is a unitised method of study that is predominately completed in our workshops. On the programme you will need to complete 3 mandatory units and an additional two units which can be used to tailor make your programme to suit you. The mandatory units you will be studying are;
- Working Engineering
- Principles of Engineering Technology
- Principles of Fabrication and Welding Technology
Below are a list of the units that you can choose to tailor make your programme of study;
- Manual Metal Arc (MMA)
- Metal Inert Gas (MIG)
- Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG)
- Oxy-Acetylene
- Fabricating Sheet Metal

Entry onto this course is subject to achieving one or more of the following.
- 4 x GCSEs at grade 3 including English and Maths or 4x GCSEs at grade D including English and Maths
- City & Guilds Level 1 Certificate in Engineering
From this programme you can choose to take your studies further by studying our complete Level 3 Diploma in Welding and Fabrication or by choosing to specialise by studying on of our Welding Skills Level 3 certificates, these programmes allow you to focus on one type of welding at a time.
This programme is classified as a unitised programme, this means that each unit is assessed individually. Your tutor will work with you on each unit to ensure that the work that you are completing meet the standards set by the awarding body, if it is you will be signed off for that unit and you will move on to the next one.
There is a compulsory fee for the course of £125.
This covers costs for materials and consumables.
You are required to provide your own personal protective equipment, these are mandatory for use in the workshops and are not part of the course cost.
Students 16-18 year olds will not have to pay tuition fees, awarding body registration or exam fees. Please note: You may be entitled to a Bursary payment to help with costs such as travel to College, trips and equipment, a food allowance and childcare. To qualify you must be resident in the UK and meet the eligibility criteria which will include evidence of your financial circumstances.
